Public transport on the Severn Way
The Severn Way is well served by a variety of bus and train services. Below, we give outline details of services to the most popular destinations on the route. Rail connections are available from most towns and cities in Britain.
Services can change at short notice. Please check your travel plans by calling National Rail Enquiries (08457 48 49 50), or Traveline for bus enquiries (0870 608 2 608).
Most bus services run from Monday to Saturday, usually with an hourly or two-hourly frequency. Sunday bus services may be infrequent or non-existent. Sunday trains are also less frequent, especially before midday in rural areas.
Between the source of the river and Shrewsbury
The Aberystwyth-Shrewsbury railway line follows the river, with stations at Caersws, Newtown, Welshpool and Shrewsbury.
Two bus services also follow this part of the Severn Way. Arriva bus 75 calls at riverside villages between Llanidloes, Newtown and Welshpool, then at Ford and Shrewsbury. Tanat Valley D74 provides a more comprehensive service on the latter part of the route, calling at Crewgreen, Alberbury, Ford and Shrewsbury.
There is no regular bus service to the source of the river - we suggest you take an inexpensive taxi from Llanidloes. Llanidloes also has a daily coach to/from London.
Between Shrewsbury and Worcester
Shrewsbury and Worcester are not connected by a direct rail line but connections are available in Birmingham. Worcester has two railway stations, at Foregate Street (most Birmingham trains) and Shrub Hill (most Gloucester trains).
The Severn Valley steam railway follows the river from Bridgnorth to Bewdley with regular stations. Its final destination is Kidderminster, away from the river but with good rail and bus links. (Enquiries: 01299 403816.)
Arriva bus 436 runs between Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth, mostly away from the river but with a stop at Cressage.
Other public transport links on this section include:
  • Ironbridge: Regular bus service to Telford and Wellington (for railway stations on Birmingham-Shrewsbury line). Additional bus service to Bridgnorth.
  • Stourport: Regular bus services to Worcester and other destinations. Railway station at Hartlebury (three miles' walk) on Worcester Foregate Street-Birmingham Snow Hill line.
  • Holt Fleet: Regular bus service from Holt Heath (one mile's walk) to Worcester.
  • Between Worcester and Gloucester
There is a regular train service between the two cities, calling at Ashchurch (two miles' walk from Tewkesbury with bus link). Worcester and Gloucester have good rail connections to Birmingham, Bristol and London.
Swanbrook bus 51 follows the river from Upton-on-Severn to Gloucester, via Ripple, Tewkesbury, Haw Bridge, Ashleworth and Maisemore. Buses run every one-two hours.
    Gloucester to Chepstow (west bank)
The Gloucester-Newport railway line has stations at Lydney and Chepstow.
Stagecoach service 73 runs every hour between Gloucester and Newport, via Minsterworth, Westbury, Newnham, Blakeney, Lydney, Woolaston, Tutshill and Chepstow.
    Gloucester to Avonmouth (east bank)
Public transport is very limited between Gloucester and the Severn Bridge. Slimbridge is three miles' walk from Cam & Dursley railway station, on the Gloucester-Bristol lien.
Aust Interchange (by the Severn Bridge) has an hourly bus service to Bristol.
Severn Beach and Avonmouth are on a branch line railway from Bristol.
